Funeral Honor Details

The post frequently provides an honor detail for funerals of veterans.  This consists of several members of the post in uniform forming a rifle squad of 3 to 7 members who fire three volleys using the .30 cal. M-1 Garand rifles. An additional member, normally the Sergeant of Arms, gives the commands for the volleys.

Flag Display and Disposal

How to Display the United States Flag

1. The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
2. The flag is never allowed to touch the ground or the floor.
3. When hung over a sidewalk on a rope extending from a building to a pole, the union stars are always away from the building.
4. When vertically hung over the center of the street, the flag always has the union stars to the north in an east/west street, and to the east in a north/south street.
5. The flag of the USA should be at the center and highest point of the group when a number of flags of states or localities or pennants of societies are grouped and displayed from staffs.
6. The flag should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free.
7. The flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day then raised to the top of the staff.
8. Never fly the flag upside down except as a signal of distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
9. The flag is never flown in inclement weather except when using an all-weather flag.

10. The flag can be flown every day from sunrise to sunset and at night if illuminated properly.  c 7, Christmas Day Dec 25

The American Legion collects unserviceable flags.  Protocol dictates that an American Flag should be disposed of by burning.  In is considered unpatriotic to dispose of it in the trash.  At least once per year, usually on Flag Day, June 14, these flags are burnt in an official American Legion ceremony with great respect and solemnity.  Posts often invite scout troops to join in the ceremony.

Installation of Officers

4th of July Parade

The 4th of July parade is a major event.  A parade starts at the west end of the city and continues over a mile route.  The veterans units – American Legion and the VFW lead the parade with flags and rifles.  The parade passes in review in front of the mayor’s office and then halts for a speech at the pavilion.  The post has a special vehicle that is made to commemorate the special troop and horse rail cars (the 40 and 8).  Several members ride in the 40 and 8, and toss candy to the waiting children lining the parade route.  Of course the parade has horses, motorcycles, decorated autos, marching bands, and police, sheriff, fire department and emergency vehicles!

Memorial Day Ceremony

On memorial day, the Post and other veterans’ organizations such as the VFW gather at a cemetery for a program including an invocation, a speaker, an Honor Guards (flags and rifle salute), a bugler playing taps.  We usually chose Pleasant Hill Cemetery in West Jefferson.

Each year, the Village of West Jefferson hosts an event “The Ox Roast”.  It is accompanied by a parade and the Post joins in with our “40 and 8” vehicle. (the 40 and 8 club called the Voyageurs commemorate a railroad car used in World Wars to transport either 40 men or 8 horses. The Post has a vehicle built to look like that railroad car)

Post Educational/Recreational Trips

We take trips that will interest members of the post and their families.  In the past we have visited Motts Military Museum in Groveport Ohio, The National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, Ohio, and Fort Knox in Kentucky.  We will soon visit the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio

Buckeye Boys State & Buckeye Girls State

West Jefferson Post 201 supports Buckeye Boys State, an American Legion Program that provides an opportunity for high school students to learn about government by attending a training program held on a college campus.  The post screens applicants from the local area and after an interview usually selects three applicants.  For further information visit https://www.ohiobuckeyeboysstate.com/

The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors Buckeye Girls State, a sister program for girls. For further information visit http://buckeyegirlsstate.org/

In Jun 2021, the Vietnam Wall of Healing passed through West Jefferson heading toward the National Veterans Memorial Museum in Columbus.  It was accompanied by the Legion Riders from Madison County and from across the U.S.  We provided an honor guard near the post to salute as it passed.
