American Legion Family

In addition to  the American Legion discussed on this website, there are other organizations associated with the American Legion, (1) the American Legion Auxiliary, (2) the Sons of the American Legion, (3) the American Legion Riders and,

The 40 and 8 : An independent association of veterans.  Many American Legion members belong to this military association also.

The American Legion is a federally recognized organization comprised of veterans who are serving in the military or who have separated under honorable conditions.  Membership requirements are found on this website.  Membership in the American Legion.

My family member served on active duty so can I join under his/her service?  It’s possible that you may be able to join one of the other organizations in the “Legion Family.”

Our sister organization is the American Legion Auxiliary. Eligibility is open to mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, grand-daughters, great-grand-daughters, or grandmothers of members of The American Legion, or of deceased veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces during the listed war eras. (Women who are eligible for membership in The American Legion are also eligible to join the Auxiliary.)

The Sons of The American Legion was created in 1932 as an organization within The American Legion that exists to honor the service and sacrifice of Legionnaires. The S.A.L. is made up of males of all ages whose parents or grandparents served in the U.S. military and became eligible for membership in The American Legion. The Sons of The American Legion (SAL) is comprised of male descendants, adopted sons and step-sons of American Legion members. (There are no age limitations.) Many posts have an active SAL program and you can contact one near you to learn more.

The American Legion Riders are special posts within the American Legion composed of members who ride motorcycles.  They often lead parades or provide motorcycle escort for veterans activities.
